AUTHENTIC SCULPTURE BY FRANCIS BARNUM
SOLID PEWTER. WOOD BASE, HIGH QUALITY AMERICAN CRAFTSMANSHIP

The sculpture “Cool Water” (sometimes listed as “Cool Waters”) by Francis Barnum is a limited-edition pewter Civil War collectible sculpture produced through Chilmark Fine Pewter in the late 1980s. It is one of Barnum’s more symbolic, non-battlefield themed works, focusing on survival and relief rather than combat.

Historical idea behind the sculpture

The meaning of “Cool Water” comes directly from a major reality of Civil War life: water was one of the most critical and scarce resources for soldiers in the field.

During the American Civil War (1861–1865), soldiers often:

marched for long distances in heat and dust,
carried limited water supplies,
relied on rivers, wells, or roadside springs,
and frequently suffered from dehydration during campaigns.

Access to clean, “cool” drinking water could mean the difference between endurance and collapse during forced marches or battles.
